Operation Maac-achusetts begins today at 4:30 p.m. for the #1 ranked Iona College Men’s Basketball (24-6). Senior Guard Scott Machado, Pepsi Max Maac Player of the Year, will lead his team into Springfield, Mass. against #8 ranked Marist for the Maac Tournament.
Individual standouts Machado, Senior Forward Mike Glover and Junior Guard Lamont Jones were named to the all-Maac team. Although Machado has captivated audiences and dominated the headlines all season, head coach Tim Cluess stressed basketball is a team sport and it takes everyone from the starters to the bench to be successful.
“Everyone on the team has played an important role,” Cluess said. “Glover, Jones, Armand, Smythe, Jenkins, Desouvrie, Ridley and Fields have all been a major factor in our success.”
And a successful season it has been. Iona’s 77-72 win over Farifield in the second to last game of the season catapulted the maroon and gold into first place in the Maac and with it brought confidence and swagger to this team. But Head Coach Cluess knew this team was special even before the 2011-2012 season tipped off.
“I knew at the end of last year that this team could do something special,” said Cluess.
And when asked about his chances to dance with the best during March Madness Cluess responded, “We are very hopeful that we can make the tournament. We know the tournament will be a very competitive on with all the good teams that are in our league.”
Iona College’s game versus Marist will be aired live on ESPN 3 today at 4:30 p.m.
