March. The time of year for so many things…St. Patrick’s Day, preparation for the spring holidays, Ides. Yes…and that most special time of year when men become golfers, and wives become widows yet again. Clubs are polished, spikes are shined, and new balls and tees are purchased. You’ve got it – the county’s SIX golf courses are set to open on March 14, 2012!
Westchester County sports several, 18-hole public golf courses. Each of them different from the other, yet all sufficiently challenging enough for the most impressive handicap. Par threes, fours and fives abound from locations both South and North in the county. The six courses are: Mohansic (Yorktown), Dunwoodie (Yonkers), Sprain Lake (Yonkers), Maple Moor (White Plains), Saxon Woods (White Plains) and Hudson Hills (Ossining). There are driving ranges at Saxon Woods, Mohansic, Sprain Lake and Dunwoodie.
The season actually “tees off” with the Eighth Annual Journal News Golf Show at the County Center. This event is sponsored in conjunction with the County Parks Department and the Metropolitan Golf Association, and will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, 2012, from 10am to 5pm. On March 14, OPENING DAY (which is weather and conditions permitting, by the way), there will be a FIFTY (50%) PERCENT off opportunity on the cost of Green’s Fees at five participating courses (the Hudson Hills course will NOT be participating in this offer). This discount marks the 50th anniversary of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
The county’s Green’s Fees have been increased, and the fees for 18 holes with a Westchester County Parks Pass are: weekends/holidays – $35; weekdays – $31; seniors and juniors, weekdays only – $24. Without a park pass, the fees are $45 and $41 respectively. There are discounted fees for Twilight Times and nine holes. Fees for golf carts are separate, and each course also has a Pro Shop, and also a course professional available for private and group lessons at additional charges.
County Park Passes can be purchased at the pro shop at each golf course. In order to purchase a pass, you must bring one form of photo identification, and also one form of proof of residency in Westchester County. The fee for an individual park pass is $60, and enables you to use all of the amenities of the Westchester County Parks Department.
Course reservations may be made by telephone at (914) 995-4653, or you can access the online reservation system by visiting golf.westchestergov.com. Through their system, you can make your reservations up to one week in advance, 24 hours a day. By logging onto the County website, you can also find out specific information about each of the golf courses.
And after you have beat your personal best, or scored the lowest in your foursome? Head to one of the restaurants – there is one at each course – for a meal or a cocktail with your friends. Its the perfect way to unwind after a round of golf!
