There are fundraisers, and then there are “fun”raisers. Two of Westchester’s Volunteer Fire Departments have certainly cornered the market on raising money the fun-fair way. At opposite ends of the county are the Yorktown Heights Fire Department and the Mamaroneck Fire Department. Both are staffed with volunteers, and both know how to throw a party.
Starting on June 22, 2011 and running through June 26, 2011 is the Yorktown Heights Annual Fireman’s Carnival and Parade. The event begins at 7pm on the 22nd, with the parade. Yorktown is joined by other local area Fire Departments such as Somers and Lake Mohegan. But the enjoyment does not end there. The parade is the kick-off event for the Carnival. Located at Commerce Street and Veterans Road, the Carnival features rides and attractions, and food and excitement for kids of all ages. The hours are Thursday and Friday, from 6-11pm, Saturday from 1-11 pm and Sunday, from 1-9pm.
A bit further south and a bit later in the month, is the 64th Annual Village of Mamaroneck Fireman’s Carnival and Parade. This is the Mamaroneck Fire Department’s (100% volunteer) annual fundraiser. The parade starts the event on June 29, 2011, and is one of the largest Fireman’s Parades in the state. Over 35 Fire Departments participate in this parade, and come from Westchester, Long Island, and you will even see trucks and bagpipes from the FDNY! The Carnival is held at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck, and features food, rides and games.
If you are in the area of either of these events, hop on over with the family, and support these two organizations who do so much for their respective communities!
