Child•cor, a wellness center for children, opens Saturday, August 3rd, in Thornwood, NY. The new facility will combine yoga, dramatic arts and creative meditative practices to build confidence and promote well-being for children between the ages of 7-12. In doing so, the program aims to provide child participants with the tools and strategies needed to manage stress and foster an improved sense of self at a young age.
Founder and Executive Director, Elena Olivieri, has over ten years of experience teaching elementary and middle school education in New York City, Westchester County, New York and in Budapest, Hungary. During her experience in Budapest, Ms. Olivieri saw the positive effects that yoga, relaxation techniques, daily affirmations and dramatic arts had on her students. By implementing these ideas in her classrooms, she found her students became more focused and successful in all areas of the curriculum and in their daily lives.
The inspiration for Child•Cor (cor, meaning heart in Latin) thus came from witnessing the profound impact of implementing wellness practices in a classroom setting. “Through these types of experiences with my students,” Ms. Olivieri explains,“I found that I may not have been teaching arithmetic or the science of gravity, but I was teaching how to be proud of yourself, how to accept yourself and others, to appreciate your peers, and how to be more present, which collectively enhanced the learning of all of their common branch subjects. I was teaching the whole child!”
Child•Cor will run four-week programs held on Saturdays from 10am-12pm starting August 3rd. During each four-week program, participants will engage in centering activities, mindful exercises, improvisation and breathing practices. For more information about Child•cor please visit www.childcor.com.
