Dinner with Friends at this New Rochelle Eatery

Alvin & Friends Restaurant, New Rochelle

Have you met Alvin?  Alvin Clayton is the owner and proprietor of Alvin and Friends Restaurant in New Rochelle, and if you are not friends with him, we suggest you drop in.

A few weeks ago we decided to try this new-to-New Rochelle restaurant, just across from the library on Lawton Avenue.  It was so wonderful, that last week we went back with friends of our own.

Upon walking into the wonderfully warm ambiance of the restaurant, we were promptly seated…and shortly thereafter, greeted by Alvin Clayton.  Clayton is a fantastic restaurateur.  This former model, and talented artist, is friendly and welcoming, and makes you feel as though you are sitting in the dining room of his home.  And that dining room, by the way, is decorated with all his original and beautiful artwork!  Alvin carries his hospitality ideology over in to his wait staff, all very attentive and accommodating.

Cornmeal Crusted Oyster appetizer at Alvin & Friends, YUM!

Now, for the food.  Oh, the glorious, Southern and Caribbean influenced cuisine!  For starters, this writer had the cornmeal crusted fried oysters.  They were crunchy, plentiful, and topped with a drizzle of a delicious aioli sauce, and brightened by fresh onions, tomatoes and hot peppers.   We also had an order of the Sweet and Smokey chicken wings, a wonderful alternative to the usual Buffalo Wings served in virtually every pub in Westchester.

Appetizers were followed by the main courses:  a light, but hearty pan-fried catfish, served on a bed of grits and black-eyed peas that were out of this world!  There was the slow braised ox tail dish (the meat falls off the bone!), a fresh and fabulous mahi-mahi special, and a divine sugar-cane pork chop with yucca fries!

There are also some super side dishes…including modern takes on traditional macaroni and cheese, and slow cooked collard greens.

Don’t forget to save room for the dessert.  We recommend either the Red Velvet Bread Pudding, or the Pineapple upside down cake – both winners!!

So hop on down to Lawton Street in New Ro, for a visit with Alvin at his restaurant.  We think you will be come fast friends of his too!  You can find him on the web, and make your reservations, here.
