Audiences are Invited to Come in Costume for the Special Saturday Matinee

Purchase, NY, September 1, 2015: This Halloween season, Purchase Opera will present a playful version of Hansel and Gretel for families and adults of all ages in the Recital Hall of the Purchase College Performing Arts Center.

“Hansel and Gretel is an enchanting introduction to opera for young audiences and a perennial favorite of regular opera-goers who delight in the charming folk music,” according to Jacque Trussel, director of Purchase Opera and Purchase College Conservatory of Music’s Voice and Opera Studies.

Performances will be held Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m. At the Saturday matinee, children are invited to come in costume, take photos with the cast, and enjoy a special sweet treat.

Based on the popular fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, this energetic opera, composed by Engelbert Humperdinck, is fully staged with elaborate sets and costumes. The opera is performed in German with English subtitles that are easy to follow for young audience members. The performance is just under two hours including a 20-minute intermission.

Adult tickets are $20 and $10 for children. Discounts are available for Purchase College students and seniors. To order tickets, please visit www.artscenter.org or call 914.251.6200.

On October 21, 22, and 23 at 10:30 a.m. Purchase Opera will present an abbreviated version of the opera in English for schoolchildren from Westchester and Fairfield counties. Tickets for the English version are $7 per person. To book a school group, contact 914.251.5909.

Hansel and Gretel will feature students in the Purchase College Conservatory of Music’s Voice and Opera Studies department—a highly selective conservatory program that has won 10 top awards for its professional-level productions from the National Opera Association.

“We are thrilled to give our students the opportunity to perform this timeless piece—and also provide the community with an approachable, world-class opera experience in a local venue, ” Jacque Trussel said.

This production is made possible with support from the Westchester Community Foundation – Rudyard & Emanuella Reimss Fund; The Emily Grant Opera Performance and Production Fund; The L. Werlinich Opera Production Endowment; and the Purchase College Foundation.
