There are long distance relationships…most of us have had one at some time or another. There are couples that are bi-coastal, even. And military families can explain the pressure that one spouse being away can place on relationships. Most couples who have one partner in the Middle East are usually in the military circle. But, for one Westchester couple, maintaining a marriage when one is here, and one is thousands of miles away in Afghanistan is more than most of us can fathom.
For Peter Bussian and his wife, Elizabeth Almond-Bussian, distance is just par for the course. Their relationship and their marriage have both been peppered with outside forces that might rock the bonds of love, yet they have not only survived, but indeed have thrived.
Liz and Peter met during a time that was not ideal. For both of them as individuals, coming from broken relationships could have jaded them towards love. And for both of them as individuals, they were hurting the same as almost every other American. You see, their first date was only one month after the attacks on September 11, 2001. While the country was recovering, they were each seeking a soul mate. They found each other on Match.com, and thus began their journey with each other paralleling their journeys as individuals on the paths of life. As Liz Bussian said, “where our heads were to be dating at that time, no one knows!” According to her, their first date was a disaster! “Good thing he (Peter) went into rescue mode, found a cozy bar, and laid a kiss on me!” They managed to squeeze out another date…and then one date after the other, they fell in love.
However two short months into their relationship, Peter left for Afghanistan. No, not to fight for his country, but as a photographer and filmmaker, he had traveled to Afghanistan previously, and felt compelled by the people, the culture and the terrain to go back in 2002 for three months. It was hard on the budding relationship, and as Liz says “we could only communicate on giant satellite phones”! Thank goodness that 10 years have gone by and technology has progressed. Somewhere along the way they found time for a quiet, rooftop ceremony in Manhattan to lovingly tie them in the bonds of marriage in 2007.
Peter has gone back almost every year to Afghanistan, a place he finds compelling as a professional, and as an individual. Liz is busy here in Westchester as a Trauma Therapist, who also finds solace and fun in her side business with Stella and Dot Jewelry. Over the years together, each has helped the other build difficult, and often emotionally draining careers. Bussian says that without supporting each other in their career choices, it would be difficult to go forward.
We wanted to know how the Bussian’s maintain their relationship while spending so much time apart. Liz says “it takes extra attention to keep it alive – in some ways as we don’t spend a lot of time together, its like a new relationship every time. But on the other hand it takes some readjustment time to get used to each other again – you have to really put more effort into communication. We don’t take each other for granted because the time we spend together can be short.”
The couple also makes time for romantic travel when Peter is here in the States. They focus on their love for each other, and take time for decompression and romance! They really are a wonderful example of true feelings and the fact that love can travel across miles to bring a couple together.
