Oh. Oh my…I am feeling guilty. My kids both got new Kindles for Christmas. And, guess who has been using them the most? Yep…its me. I admit it. I have not read a book in quite some time, and I decided to finally read THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, by deceased Swedish author, Stieg Larsson. I have had the trilogy by Larsson on my iPad for quite some time now, but the new Kindles are so much more compact, and it was just crying out to me to be read on one of them. So, I read it. And then, I read THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, and I am now immersed in THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST. Are they all page-turners? Indeed. I cannot stop until I finish. The sink has dishes, and the laundry is mounting. And, this weekend, I will be dragging my husband to the nearest multiplex to see the American film version of the first book.
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (hereinafter called TGWTDT) is a re-make of the Swedish version by the same title. The newest film stars Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomqvist, an investigative journalist hired by Henrik Vanger, a Swedish business mogul. Vanger hires Blomqvist, on the down and out from a libel trial, to uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his niece, Harriet Vanger, nearly 40 years in the past. Through various twists and turns, Blomqvist comes upon Lisbeth Salander, a gifted computer hacker/research specialist employed by a high-end security company. But…Salander is no average working gal. She is a dark (in style and psyche) individual with a mysterious and devastating past. To say any more regarding the plot would be a spoiler, and this author thinks that it is worth the time of anyone reading this article to see the movie and read the book (in whichever order you choose).
The character of Salander is played by none other than Bedford’s own Rooney Mara. The 26 year old Mara is the grand-daughter of the famous Giants owner, Wellington Mara, daughter of Timothy Mara, the vice president of player evaluations for the Giants, and the sister of Kate Mara, also an actress. On her maternal side, her grandfather, Tim Rooney, has run Yonkers Raceway since 1972. Mara, who is of slight build with long red hair, has appeared in such films as the remake of horror film A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and most recently as Mark Zuckerberg’s ex girlfriend in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. She won the role as Lisbeth Salander over such Hollywood names as Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. For her role in TGWTDT, she cut her hair short, dyed it black, and had to pierce her brow, right nipple, nose and lip in addition to adding four piercings to her ears.
The film was released on December 20, 2011, and is being shown in theaters all over Westchester. Check your local listings, or visit www.fandango.com, to find information about showings and tickets. That’s what I am going to do right…about…now!
